Cottages at Monument Beach and Pocasset
Cottages in Monument Beach and Pocasset often have small windows and compact rooms, so a bulky treatment can swallow a room. Light-filtering honeycomb shades are a good fit: they sit neatly inside the frame, soften the light and help a small room hold its warmth once the season turns, because the cells trap air.
Cottage bathrooms and kitchens see a lot of damp sea air. Faux wood blinds and polysatin shutters stand up to that moisture better than natural wood, and cafe-style shutters on the lower half of a window give privacy while leaving the top open to the sky.

Village houses in Buzzards Bay
The village housing in Buzzards Bay sits close together, often with neighbours a short way from the side windows. Privacy matters there as much as light. Top-down, bottom-up shades let you lower the top of the shade for daylight while the bottom stays closed, and sheer shades with fabric vanes blur the view in from outside while you still see out.
Sunrooms, dining rooms and rooms with a view
Plenty of houses near the canal and the bay have one room built around the view: a sunroom, a glassed-in porch or a dining room with a wide window over the water or the marsh. Those rooms are the hardest to dress, because nobody wants to cover the reason the room exists.
The trick is to treat the view and the glare separately. A woven shade or a sheer that lowers only partway takes the edge off the low sun at dinner time and still leaves the horizon visible. A shade that raises fully out of sight keeps the glass clear on grey days. For a sunroom that bakes in summer and goes cold in winter, a honeycomb shade on the worst-facing windows evens things out. We can show you each option side by side, so you can see how much view each one keeps.

Canal-side rooms, wind and reflected light
Rooms that face the canal take wind-driven weather and hard light thrown back off the water. That reflected glare comes in low and bright, and it can wash out a television or fade a rug faster than you would expect.

Solar screen shades are the usual answer: they cut glare and keep the view, and the openness of the screen fabric decides how much you see through it. A tighter weave controls more glare and gives more daytime privacy, while a more open one keeps the water in full view. Where wind rattles the windows, a fitted shade that closes snugly to the frame helps the room feel calmer, and motorizing a run of shades means they can lower themselves when the afternoon sun swings around.

Newer colonials inland
Away from the water, the newer colonials inland have larger windows, sliders to the deck and often a vaulted family room. These suit a mix: honeycomb shades on bedroom windows for darkness and warmth, vertical blinds or gliding panels across the slider, and Roman shades in the dining room for a finished look.

A visit to the Sagamore showroom works the same way whichever kind of house you have:
- Start with the house. Tell us whether it is a cottage, a village house or a newer colonial, and which rooms take the sun or the weather.
- See samples. We show you the Hunter Douglas fabrics and finishes that suit those windows.
- Measure. We visit to measure every window ourselves and leave you a written estimate. Estimates are free.
- Install. Our installers, certified by Hunter Douglas, fit everything and check each piece before they leave.

Sagamore showroom questions
Where is the showroom?
11 Cranberry Hwy, Sagamore, MA 02561.
When are you open?
Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm. Saturday and Sunday visits are by appointment only.
What works best on windows facing the canal?
Solar screen shades are the usual choice for glare off the water, because they cut the brightness and keep the view. Sheer shades are a softer option.
Are shutters a good idea in a damp cottage?
Polysatin shutters, such as Palm Beach, cope well with moisture, which makes them a sensible pick for bathrooms and kitchens near the water.
Can you come to my house?
Yes. Our vans carry samples, so we can help you choose at your own windows.
