Why North Dartmouth windows suit motorization

Motorized blinds and shades take the reaching, tugging and walking from window to window out of daily life. A press on a remote or a tap in the PowerView app, and the shade moves.

Plenty of windows around North Dartmouth make that worthwhile. A mid-century ranch off Slocum Road often has a wide picture window where three or four shades sit side by side, and moving them together is far easier than one at a time. The farm properties toward Russells Mills have deep-set sash, where a shade mounted well inside the casing can be awkward to reach over a sill or a radiator. In the Padanaram colonials and capes, a window over a tub or behind a kitchen sink is a stretch every morning. And in South Dartmouth, rooms facing Apponagansett Bay get hard afternoon glare that is easier to manage from the sofa.

Where a motor earns its place

Hard-to-reach windows

High gables, transoms, stair landings and windows behind furniture, where a cord or a wand is a nuisance.

Rooms you want to control from one spot

Living rooms, bedrooms and home offices where light changes through the day and you would rather not get up.

How control works

Hunter Douglas motorized shades and blinds run on PowerView. You can move each one from a handheld remote, or from the PowerView app on your phone or tablet. Shades can be grouped, so a whole room moves together, and set on schedules so they lift and lower at set times. Our guide to how motorized shades are controlled goes into the options in plain terms, and our window covering automation page covers schedules and scenes in more depth.

Which products can be motorized

Motorization is available across much of the Hunter Douglas range, so you do not have to trade the look you want for convenience. Honeycomb shades such as Duette, roller and screen shades, sheer shades such as Silhouette, and Roman shades such as Vignette can all be ordered with PowerView. Motorized blinds are an option too, for the precise light control of slats with a motor doing the work.

On the older colonials and capes, an inside-mounted honeycomb or Roman shade keeps a slim profile with the motor hidden in the headrail. On a ranch’s picture window, roller or sheer shades in one fabric can move as a set. For bay-facing rooms, screen fabrics cut glare while keeping the water in view.

Blinds or shades with a motor

The choice between the two is the same with a motor as without one. Slats give the finest control over light: tilt them partly open and you keep a view while cutting the sun, which suits a home office or a kitchen. Shades are softer, with options for room-darkening, sheer light or the insulating cells of a honeycomb. If you are leaning toward motorized blinds, tell us which rooms you have in mind and we will confirm which blind lines and operating options suit them, alongside the shade alternatives, so you can compare the two at the window.

Safer and tidier windows

Motorized shades have no cords hanging at the window, which keeps them out of reach of children and pets and leaves the window looking cleaner. On a shade that is raised and lowered several times a day, the motor also saves wear from uneven pulling, which helps the fabric hang straight for longer.

From consultation to first use

  1. Request a consultation and tell us which rooms and windows you are thinking of motorizing.
  2. We visit with samples in the van, look at each window and talk about how you want to control it.
  3. We measure and put together a free estimate for the products and installation.
  4. Hunter Douglas makes the shades to our measurements.
  5. A certified Hunter Douglas installer fits each shade, sets its limits, pairs it with your remote and app, and shows you how it works.

If a motorized shade you already own stops responding, ask about blind and shade repair.
