Thin silver aluminum blinds on floor-to-ceiling windows in a wood-lined dining room looking out to trees

A slim blind for tight frames and busy rooms

Metal blinds are the quiet workhorse of the window business, and they fit plenty of the houses we visit from our North Dartmouth showroom. The ranches off Faunce Corner Road and Slocum Road often have replacement windows with shallow frames, and an aluminum headrail is slim enough to tuck inside them. In a Padanaram colonial or shingled cape, a thin slat in a soft color can sit almost unnoticed on a kitchen or back hall window, leaving the old trim as the feature.

The deep nineteenth-century sash in the farmhouses toward Russells Mills gives an aluminum blind room to spare. And in South Dartmouth’s water-facing rooms, closely spaced slats break up hard afternoon glare off Apponagansett Bay without hiding the view entirely.

What makes aluminum a good choice

Aluminum slats are thin, light and tough. They stand up to children, pets and daily handling, they clean with a wipe, and their narrow profile stacks into a small bundle when raised. These are the three things people usually ask us to show them.

Narrow slats

Mini and micro slats give fine light control and a light, tidy look on entry, kitchen and office windows.

Rooms that work hard

Mudrooms, kitchens, children’s rooms and home offices, where a blind gets bumped, handled and wiped down often.

Colors and finishes

Solid colors, metallic finishes and textures, from soft neutrals that disappear into the wall to bold accents.

Where metal blinds fit best

Every window is different, but these are the places we most often suggest aluminum.

  • Shallow window frames. The compact headrail fits where a bulkier blind or shade would stick out past the trim.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms. Aluminum does not mind steam and wipes clean easily.
  • Windows with cranks or handles. A cut-out lets the blind clear a casement crank or the handle on a door.
  • Offices and workrooms. Fine tilt control keeps screen glare down while daylight still comes in.
  • Rental units and second homes. A durable, easy-care blind makes sense where windows see heavy use.

Light control in small steps

The advantage of a narrow slat is precision. Small turns of the wand change the light by small amounts, so you can find the angle that keeps sun off your desk or out of your eyes while you can still see the yard. Closed, the slats overlap for privacy. Raised, the blind folds into a short stack at the top of the window so the glass is almost entirely clear.

For rooms that need to be darker, such as a bedroom or a media room, we can talk about wider slats, an outside mount that overlaps the frame, or pairing the blind with drapery. In a sunny kitchen or a home office facing the bay, most people simply leave the slats tilted up through the afternoon and forget about them, because the light stays soft and the room stays bright.

How we measure and fit metal blinds

  1. You request a consultation and we set a time to visit, bringing samples in our van.
  2. We check each frame for depth, squareness, cranks and handles.
  3. You compare slat sizes and colors at the window.
  4. We measure every opening ourselves and give you a free estimate.
  5. Certified Hunter Douglas installers fit each blind and check the tilt and lift before they leave.

Lift options vary by model and include cordless styles that keep cords out of reach. We will show you which choices apply to the slat size you pick.

Questions about aluminum blinds

Are metal blinds good in a kitchen?

Yes. Aluminum handles steam and splashes and wipes clean with a damp cloth, which makes it one of the most practical choices for a kitchen window.

Will aluminum fit a shallow frame?

Usually. The slim headrail fits inside many frames that are too shallow for other blinds or shades. We check the depth at the visit.

Can a blind work around a window crank?

Yes. A cut-out lets the blind clear a crank or a door handle so it hangs straight.

Do narrow slats block light well?

Closed, the slats overlap for privacy and cut most of the light. For a really dark room, an outside mount or added drapery helps.

How do I clean aluminum slats?

Dust them, or close the slats and wipe them with a damp cloth. They do not mind water.

Are cordless options available?

Cordless lifts are available on some models. We will tell you which apply once you have chosen a slat size.
